Applying/Submitting Tableau Ambassador Nominations

A little over a year ago, I took a chance on myself and applied to be a Tableau Social Ambassador. Here are some of my reflections on the application process and what it has meant for me to be a Tableau Ambassador.

To say I was a bit obsessed with the previous Ambassador cohort would have been an understatement. This was both a blessing and a curse; I had all these individuals I looked up to and felt I could never compare to them. People say comparison is the thief of joy and I was already in the mindset of robbing myself of gaining this recognition. That is my first piece of advice: no two people are alike, no matter how similar they may be in their contributions to the community. We all bring something unique, so don’t discount your contributions. Once I got over my holdbacks, it was time for me to apply.
Before even looking at the application, I was overwhelmed. I had heard it was extensive and didn’t know where to begin. Now, applying for the 2nd year, I am a lot more prepared. Here are a few things I have done (for my application and nomination applications):
Make a list. Keep a list of people who have impacted your journey with Tableau. This can be a Notion page, Google sheet, notepad, or anywhere that you can easily revisit. By doing this, you make sure not to miss anyone who has been a champion for you in the community.
Gather links (Optional). Links will be super important when completing the nomination form. Make notes of people’s social media profiles and Tableau Public links. I cannot tell you how difficult it is to go and search for all of these links when you are submitting multiple applications. You’ll also need these links to complete the nomination.
Keep highlight notes. Jot down quick notes about those you would like to nominate. Did they host a Tableau User Group? Did they present at a Tableau User Group? Have they built spaces for you to connect with other Tableau practitioners? Does this person mentor others? Did this person give you great advice or help with Tableau? No contribution is too small – make note of them all!
Don’t be shy. Don’t wait for others to nominate YOU! If this is something you want to be a part of, you will be your best advocate.
Overall, the application process is simple, laying out clearly what is needed. The short answer questions are based on contributions to the community and why this person would be a great leader. If I could share another tip, don’t wait until the last minute to complete nominations, as they will take a few minutes to complete. I would say on average, most took me around 10-20 minutes, but now that I am better prepared, I think I will be completing them a lot more quickly! The most uncomfortable part of completing a nomination for yourself is that you need to be your best advocate! Don’t undersell your contributions, highlight the moments that no one saw, flaunt your achievements! It will feel uncomfortable for most people, but no one knows all the work you have been doing better than you.
When I submitted my application, I went through the form and copied and pasted all the questions (but you can find the list here), so I could answer them in my own time. There is a reason the application window is so long, so don’t feel that you need to get it in right away. Take your time! By doing this, I allowed myself to word vomit and slowly began refining over a couple of days. While submitting your own nomination can feel weird, I had the most fun nominating others within the community. It was the first time I could put into words how people have impacted my journey with Tableau! Once submitted, all that is left to do is wait!
Being a Tableau Social Ambassador has been a major highlight of my last year. It allowed me to connect with so many people from all around the world and share about Tableau. It has helped me give even more back to the community. I would 10/10 recommend anyone who loves Tableau and giving back to apply!
Though the Ambassador program will look a little different for this cohort, I am EXCITED for this shift. Here’s why… it will now allow more incredible community members to be recognized who may not have fit neatly into one of the predefined existing branches. This now allows a larger group of individuals who contribute to this beautiful community to be seen and acknowledged for everything they do, both visible and invisible, for the #DataFam. To me, that is a huge win.

The application deadline is 25, 2025 at 11:59 PM PST. If you are interested in applying for or nominating an incredible individual, click the link below:
